BGS Year 12 Student : Winner of The Guardian's Young Hugo Award

In January 2020, The Guardian invited aspiring Year 12 and Year 13 writers across UK schools to take part in their Young Hugo Award writing competition. Applicants needed to submit a 500-700 opinionated article on a subject of their interest.

A handful of students applied for this competition from our school, submitting thought-provoking articles on relevant topics they were passionate about.

We are thrilled to announce that Amy R in Year 12 won this competition for her article titled ‘Hypocrisy and big business: how difficult is it to go green in a modern world’.

The judges said the piece was “well evidenced, had a strong final argument and was very timely in the context of the global climate crisis”.

Amy’s winning article has been published on The Guardian website and you can read this using the following link: https://www.theguardian.com/the-guardian-foundation/2018/dec/14/hugo-young-award-winners

Amy has received a free place at the notable Guardian Masterclass (an ambitious international programme that offers a diverse range of courses in journalism, creative writing, photography and design, film and digital media, music and business skills). The school has also been offered a 12-month digital subscription with The Guardian, as well as free book tokens.

This is a fantastic achievement for Amy and will provide her will invaluable experience in journalism as she begins her preparation for Year 13 and application to university for History.

Well done Amy!
