Experiments and Explosions at the Big Bang Science Fair

The year eight students were lucky enough to head to the Big Bang Science Fair in Birmingham last week as part of British Science Week. This week, they have spent time in their English lessons to review the event. Here are what a few of the students made of the day.

Last week, the whole of Year 8 went to the Big Bang Science Fair on the 15th March, Wednesday. Year 8 pupils had a brilliant time going around in small groups and looking at wonderful and attention-grabbing stands along with hundreds of other schools. You could also earn free things to take home. Ferrets were also shown and pupils were able to pet it. Live shows were being held such as the Mad Science Fire & Ice Show and the Super-Intelligent High-Tech Robot Show.

The Mad Science Fire and Ice Show is a show consisting of high energy chemistry, demonstrations of one of the coolest chemical reactions, fizzy potions, dry ice foggy storms, fire ball explosions and more! It was an absolutely brilliant show as it was eye-catching and makes you eager to learn more. The age range was for all ages and it was a headline show.

The Super-Intelligent High-Tech Robot Show consisted of the Science Museum’s resident comedy team taking you on an amazing interactive voyage learning about the fascinating world of robots. It answers all of your questions about robots including how a robot works, what it does and why we have them. The team tells you how we program the robots and how they are engineered. They also tell you which is best – robot technology or human biology. This exciting interactive science show features awesome live robot demonstrations and mind-blowing experiments. The subjects included in this show are Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Technology and the age group is 11 to 14 years old.

Here are what students thought about the fair –

Joe – “My favourite part was the Dry Ice Show as it was a unique experience that I have not seen before. I found it very interesting. The team showed us how dry ice worked and did engaging experiments with the dry ice. “

Bhaskar – “My favourite part was the drone. It’s because I had the same drone at home and I got to fly the drone past obstacles. This was a new experience because I couldn’t do that at home.”

Zara – “My favourite part of the fair was the Civil Engineer Stall. I think it was very educational as they told you about the career specifically.”

Nikita – “Personally I think that trying on the VR (Virtual Reality) Headset was the coolest thing I did at the fair. Although I knew it wasn’t real, it felt so real to me being able to look inside the human brain and looking at blood streams. It made me feel like I was actually inside the brain, even though it sounds very unrealistic.”

Amber – “I think that the most interesting part for me was viewing cars that run on salt water. It was very, very interesting and made me more willing to learn more. It boosted my love for Chemistry as I watched the show.”

In conclusion, the Big Bang Science Fair was a huge success as it boosted students’ knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in a fun, interactive way. Staff in schools were encouraged to organise the trip for students to take them on a wonderful journey revolving around the world of Science. Students found that they were enjoying the interesting stalls that the Science team had put up.  It was a very astounding and extraordinary trip and it makes us want to go to the Big Bang Science Fair again.

Year 8 pupils had an amazing opportunity to visit the Big Bang Science fair in Birmingham on Wednesday the 15th of March.  There were multiple stalls and experiments on hand for students to trial. The staffs at the fair were very helpful and friendly and seemed very enthusiastic for their stall which made the experience ever more exciting.

Student’s reviews;

Bhaskar- ‘My favourite part was where I got to fly a drone as well as that I learnt how to stabilise the drone and fly it past obstacles. Doing this activity, it taught me about the laws of aerodynamics which will help me in my future career.’

Joe- ‘Personally I enjoyed the Dry ice show put on by the Royal Institute of Chemistry. In the show the presenters carried out multiple experiments using dry ice. My favourite experiment was the ‘Dry Ice Bubble’. This was when dry ice was funnelled through a pipe to condense it and the edge was dipped in washing detergent. This created a bubble that when touched something would pop but would disperse the dry ice. I thought this was a very unique experiment which I thoroughly enjoyed.’

Amber- ‘My favourite stall was the cars that ran on just salt water; I liked this as not only were it useful but my love for Chemistry enhanced the experience.’

In conclusion we believe the science fair enriched our knowledge and understanding in all of the three sciences. We gained vital knowledge that will be very important when studying for GCSE’s. The Science Fair didn’t let down and almost everybody would love to go again.

On the Wednesday 15th of March year 8 went to Birmingham. It was a tiring two hour journey and finally we reached to the big bang science fair. When we reached we separated into little group and explored the place. The science fair happened to deepen our understanding of biology, chemistry and physics.we also went to the fair as it was a great opportunity and it opened many peoples minds and views on science.the venue was a very big place with hundreds of different stall displaying different aspects of science.there were many different schools and many were amazed on what they saw.the fair went on for 4 days but sadly we were only able to explore it for one day.

There were many different stall showing spectacular thing. Some were:

  • Technology(e.g. The vr headset)
  • Live shows
  • Robots
  • Organ and the body
  • Career choices
  • And much more…..

When we exploring the venue we got a lot of things to keep so we could cherish the memories. We got bracelets, lanyards, sweets and Frisbees.

We interviewed Zara to tell us about what her experience was like. “I thoroughly enjoyed the science fair. I thought it was very educational as well as interesting. My favourite part was trying the vr headset that showed you the bloodstream; I would definitely like to go again.”

We also interviewed Joe. Joe found the science fair super fun. He loved the food and he liked the ultrasound stall.he was so amazed about the technology there was and was so delighted that there was a stall about organ. Joe definitely enjoyed it.

Next time come along with friends and family and explore the future of science.
