Entering virtual reality with Google Expeditions

Walking through snow on Mount Everest, looking around the International Space Station and seeing the roots of a reproducing plant, were just some of the places our students were able to visit today thanks to Google Expeditions.

Students across all year groups were given the chance to experience a virtual reality trip taking them out of the classroom.

Google Expeditions provided a set of virtual reality goggles, and control pad for teachers to guide students through a chosen site. Directed by what the staff member could set on the screen, the students were then able to get close up with some of the Seven Wonders of the World, as well as deep underground, where their textbooks can't.

Computer Science teacher Mr Howden said: " It was a completely new experience for most students to engage with this technology and students thoroughly enjoyed the Google Expedition sessions."

The scheme put on by Google only lasts for one year, thanks to Mrs Martin for getting in touch with them and enabling the school to have a full day of experiences.

Mrs Martin added: "It's not often you can go home and tell your family that at school that day you went on a whirlwind 3D tour of the Seven Wonders of the World, but our students were given this very opportunity recently when Google Expeditions visited, supplying all the required virtual technology technology. In fact, some also went into space or explored the mystical creatures of the deep in an underwater expedition.

"Both staff and students had a thoroughly insightful and enjoyable day."
