Lonza Scientist of the Year 2017 opens for year nine and twelve students

Do you have what it takes to be crowned Lonza Scientist of the Year 2017?

The school has once again teamed up with leading supplier to the life science industry, Lonza, to find students with the greatest flair and passion for science.

The Scientist of the Year competitions are open to year nine students (in the Junior category) and year twelve  A Level science students (Senior category).

This week in their science lessons the year nine's will have the competition introduced to them. Each student will pick an essay from with the Chemistry, Biology or Physics questions and start working on their research on it as part of their half term homework.

All essays need to be handed in to the science department by the end of the school year. The best submissions will then be chosen and put forward to the day of the finals which will be held at Lonza in October. Students will have to present their findings to a panel of Lonza scientists who will decide on the day which of the presenters will be Junior Lonza Scientist of the Year. Cash prizes and trophies are on offer, as well as goody bags and a tour of the labs for each of the finalists.

The year 12 students are able to choose their own essay titles. In no more than 1200 words they need to present their findings and arguments around their chosen topics, and hand in their essays by the end of the school year.

The best of the submissions will be chosen to go forward to the finals in October, where they too will have to present to Lonza scientists. Again, cash prizes and trophies are on offer for the student who is named as the Senior Lonza Scientist of the Year.

This year, we have a number of other secondary schools, who are also taking part in the competition, increasing the number of students who those from Burnham Grammar will be competing against. We hope that this will spur the students taking part to work even harder and show why they are worthy of winning the competition.

The title is a fantastic opportunity for all taking part, especially those who are looking to pursue a career in the sciences.
