Talented furniture designer showcases at The Young Furniture Makers of the Year Exhibition.

Year 13 Resistant Materials student Jack was picked to showcase his furniture at a national exhibition alongside 100 other talented young designers.

Jack tells us about his experience....

Having my work selected for a The Young Furniture Makers of the Year exhibition in London was an unexpected invitation that I was very lucky to receive – thanks to Mrs Garner (Head of Art, Design and Technology) displaying my classes work on Twitter and allowing my project to be scouted.

The event itself, was much larger than anticipated, making used of three separate buildings focused in and around the Dutch Centre (central London) with around 100 or more students displaying intricate work at GCSE, A level and University grade. The hardest task for all of us being the struggle to get each piece all the way through prime-time traffic and safely into the venue itself!

Being able to get critiques and opinions on my work was brilliant for me to take forward into my A2 project, and get some good advice from real professionals of the industry. The innovation of the work produced was endless, and speaking to some of the students themselves, sharing our designs and our work, really opened my views of how far you can take even the simplest of objects. The only – arguable – downside being the expectations of my Mrs Garner for my next designs, making sure to note down all the ‘cool thingies’ she wants me to include.

I would solidly recommend to any students who are looking for work experience or real life opportunities in the design industry to take a look at the exhibition on The London Furniture Makers Company website and keep posted on their other events that they offer.
