Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place annually on the 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and gives us all an opportunity to pause and remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis, the millions more persecuted, and all those affected by subsequent genocides.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘'One Day' . It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness before, during and after genocide.

Significant anniversaries which can be commemorated to help us explore the histories of the Holocaust. What happened on each One Day and how did each contribute to the development or commemoration of the Holocaust?

What does victim and survivor testimony tell us about daily life before the Holocaust, what it was like to spend 2 One Day in a ghetto, concentration camp, or other site of persecution, or about rebuilding a life after the war?

What did victims and survivors hope for, One Day, after their persecution was over? How does literature and artwork help us explore hope for the future as a form of spiritual resistance during the Holocaust? What are our aspirations for the future? What do we hope the world will be like One Day, when we have learned the important lessons we can take from the Holocaust?

How can we each, on this One Day, remember and share the stories of One Person – a victim or survivor of the Holocaust?

This really fits with the Burnham Grammar School school ethos and message ‘Embracing challenge’ and to be ‘Caring Individuals’ and  ‘Active Citizens’.

In this case being an ALLY means recognising the inequalities and examples of discrimination in the world around us.

There are also a number of virtual resources you may wish to engage with at home.

21st -26th January - Virtual Tour of Yad Vashem's Holocaust History Museum

Take part in a virtual tour of the Holocaust History Museum in Jerusalem which gives you an insight of the Holocaust experience. Especially recommended is the Children’s Memorial from 52:36 minutes into the YouTube presentation.

The UK Ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 will be streamed online on Thursday 27 January at 7pm. You can register to have this streamed live.

At 8pm, get ready to Light the Darkness with us. Households across the UK will be lighting candles and safely putting them in their windows to:

  • remember those who were murdered for who they were

  • stand against prejudice and hatred today
