At Burnham Grammar School, we provide opportunities for all students to be involved in active music making both in and out of the classroom. We believe academic achievement is not the only benefit of music education and exposure. Music ignites all areas of development and skills: intellectual, social and emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together.
To this end, we provide opportunities for all students to be involved in a range of opportunities for active music-making. In addition, students get to explore being a songwriter/composer. We want all students to discover their individual musical niche, and we aim to provide the right environment for this to take place.
For the students, music, both within the curriculum and as an extracurricular activity, contributes an element to their acquisition of a wider understanding and appreciation of British and worldwide cultures. There is a growing number of students who take the subject at GCSE.
To support this, the department is well resourced with a range of instruments, including a full class Samba set, ukuleles, and djembes.
We hold a full calendar of concerts which includes Christmas, spring, and house music competitions.
Our wide range of ensembles includes orchestra, choirs, bands and smaller chamber ensembles. The participation in music events is a key element in the arts education at Burnham Grammar School. Our team of instrumental teachers regularly supports the students in concert preparation and has an excellent track record of examination entry. In addition, many students play for pleasure using the specialised facilities to do this, and the music department has successfully supported a group of students to win a local Battle of the Bands competition.
In addition to performance, students explore being a songwriter/composer.
There is a growing music technology group and we are keen to continue investigating a range of activities in which a wider range of students might engage in making music.
The Music Department has a suite of Mac computers with Logic Pro X and Sibelius. We have also invested in subscriptions including Noteflight and Soundtrap, allowing students to further create their own music at home.
