Passing of Dr Chiu

4 Dec 2025

It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death of our much loved joint Head of Science Dr Lin Chiu on Tuesday morning.

Dr Chiu had been on sick leave for the past couple of months, but recent reports from her medical team had indicated a positive recovery over time and so this news has been devastating to everyone at the school.

We informed the staff yesterday lunchtime and her form group and classes this morning.  Counsellors are available if students feel that they need to talk through their feelings with someone other than a trusted adult at the school.

Following the death of Dr Matt Haynes, just over 3 years ago, this is a real challenge for the science department and all of the staff and older students at the school.  In addition, there are a high number of Year 13 students taught by Dr Chiu who were also taught by Dr Haynes and so the impact on their wellbeing could be significant.

Dr Chiu joined the school 8 years ago, but her association with BGS extends further back as her children attended the school.  She was incredibly hard working, kind to staff and students and as a middle leader worked tirelessly to ensure that her team’s workload was manageable.  As a teacher she was imaginative and engaging which made the most of her incredible depth of knowledge.  She was incredibly popular with her students as they felt so well supported by her and knew that she would always make time to go over their work with them.  Her colleagues felt exactly the same way.

We are mindful that Year 11 are in the middle of their mock exams and that Year 13 will be straight after Christmas and that they might worry about support in the time leading up to the summer exams.  Putting suitable arrangements in place is a priority and we will update you and them at the earliest opportunity.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr Chiu’s family and all those in our community affected by her untimely passing.

Please be mindful of your children’s feelings at this time and do not hesitate to contact us if you feel that they may need a chat or additional support.
