BGS Alumni Talk with Physics Students!

Nationally, around 23% of A-level physics students are female. Women and non-binary people are under-represented in the fields of physics and engineering. Our Year 12 female physicists are trying to redress this balance by encouraging girls and non-binary students in BGS to find out more about physics. Recently, former BGS physicist Prabh Manni visited, to share her experiences of studying Aerospace Engineering at Manchester University.

Ashwina H in Year 10 was part of this talk, and has quoted the following :

The talk was informative, inspiring and tailored to our needs. Prabh was friendly and gave great advice about a career in STEM. She not only gave us an insight into aerospace engineering, but many other types of engineering that may be of interest to us. She understood our perspective of a career in STEM, which helped make the talk engaging too!

The fact that we have opportunities like this is wonderful, because careers in STEM are still less accessible to females, and as a result many miss out on them because they are not properly informed. Although there is more of an emphasis on equality, the number of females getting involved is still considerably below the 50% mark - Prabh's career talk was a great way of encouraging avid physicists to pursue their interest.

This talk really gave me some things to think about - especially because I have not yet decided which career path I want to follow. I look forward to potential future opportunities like this!

If you are a female or non-binary student in Years 7-11 and would like to find out more about physics, please ask a friendly sixth former in your tutor group, who will know someone who is studying physics and can tell you about it. (Or you can talk to Mr Haldane.)

This website has been highly recommended by our BGS Alumni, Prabh Manni.

Thank you for coming in to talk to younger students about your university experiences!
