Year 12 Trip to JET Energy Fusion

Culham

On Thursday 1st May, a group of Year 12 physics students visited JET (Joint European Torus), which is the most advanced nuclear fusion experiment in the world. We got to speak to scientists and engineers about the technology they use to contain and control the plasma. It was fascinating to see the scale of the project and learn about how complex and intricate, the magnetic systems used to confine the plasma are.

On the 1st May we had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, which is home to JET - the world's largest and most advanced tokamak. My highlight from the trip was the talk from an expert in physics, who specialised in nuclear fusion. We learned that fusion reactions inside JET reach 150 million °C which is 10 times hotter than the centre of Sun. Overall, I found the trip both informative and engaging and would highly recommend all students who currently study or want to study physics in the future.
